RALEIGH, N.C. – October 16, 2025 – Merz Therapeutics’ U.S. subsidiary announced today the opening of the Merz Therapeutics Training Room at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). In 2023, Merz Therapeutics North America granted UAB $130,000 to assist in funding construction and capital expenses of its Merz Therapeutics Training Room in the new UAB Rehabilitation Pavilion, a state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation hospital that includes Spain Rehabilitation Center in Birmingham, AL.

“At Merz Therapeutics, we believe collaboration is key to bringing better outcomes for patients,” said Len Paolillo, President, Merz Therapeutics North America. “We’re honored to support UAB’s commitment to empowering the next generation of physicians with cutting-edge tools and training. Their dedication to excellence helps shape a smarter, stronger future for the entire healthcare community.”

The donation, contributed through the employee-driven philanthropy committee, Merz Cares, was used to fund construction, equipment and other expenses for the UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s (PM&R) new training room. The new Merz Therapeutics Training Room will provide specialized hands-on education for medical students, residents, fellows and practicing physicians in advanced, evidence-based techniques for treating neuromusculoskeletal disorders, including injection techniques, ultrasound-guided procedures and electrodiagnostic evaluations. The training room is equipped with state-of-the-art learning technologies such as a virtual anatomy platform, diagnostic ultrasound systems, injection simulation models, electromyography (EMG) training tools and audiovisual equipment for live demonstrations.

Since UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center’s establishment in 1964, it has provided care to more than 450,000 patients. The addition of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Pavilion, which opened in August, will enhance the center’s capacity to deliver comprehensive rehabilitative services to the citizens of Alabama and beyond. This 11-story facility comprises 78 rehabilitation beds and 56 acute care beds and is thoughtfully designed to prioritize patient comfort and recovery. Key features include multiple therapy gyms with floor-to-ceiling windows and advanced technologies integrated across all three specialized rehabilitation units.

“We are grateful for the support from Merz Therapeutics, which contributes to the ongoing education of future healthcare providers at UAB” said Dale Colorado, D.O., Vice Chair of Education and Program Director of UAB PM&R Residency Program. “Simulation-based training in medical education allows learners to enhance and refine their skills before they enter clinical practice. It provides healthcare providers with the tools necessary to enhance patient outcomes”.
