Our approach focuses on measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, increasing renewable electricity use where feasible, and reporting relevant performance indicators.
Key environmental principles
With our Environmental Stewardship statement, we have developed the key principles that serve as a guideline for our environmental management and governance:

We prioritize responsible resource management in product development and sourcing.

We focus our investments on reducing carbon emissions and waste generation, as well as increasing recyclability.
Managing biodiversity and land-use considerations
Our manufacturing takes place in established industrial and commercial zones. Site-selection criteria are applied to avoid biodiversity-sensitive areas and are supported by environmental due diligence processes.
Pollution prevention and emissions management
We maintain our facilities in accordance with regulatory requirements, carefully select waste management partners and conduct audits to monitor and manage emissions. Our R&D teams also work to minimize product-related waste.
Education and outreach
We provide sustainability training to all employees, promoting awareness of environmental stewardship and global best practices.
Continuous assesment
We integrate environmental impact assessments into our projects and conduct ESG due diligence on new acquisitions.

Two key environmental focus areas
Our work to be a responsible business focuses on two areas: reducing climate-relevant emissions and managing waste generation, recycling, and packaging.
Our double materiality analysis identified the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as the area where we could make a significant improvement to our environmental performance. By systematically collecting data, we have obtained a fact-based picture of our status quo and identified measures to improve our carbon footprint along the entire value chain, including:
Implementing tailored “Scope 1 and 2” reduction programs
We are increasing renewable electricity use and improving energy efficiency across our office locations where feasible.
Establishing “Scope 3” Emissions Reduction programs with our partners
With our global waste footprint as a priority, we gather comprehensive waste data from Merz Therapeutics locations, with the goal of quantifying and mapping our annual waste generation. From this, we develop waste and packaging management measures, including opportunities to improve packaging recyclability. These include:
